Have a 2005 Corolla. Started making some weird knocking noises on the way home. Local shop said the engine was going. I called Toyota, and they said it had a powertrain warranty on it still so I had it towed to Toyota. They said that if they need maintenance records, and if anything looks out of place, it might not be covered. I don't have records of changing it myself, which was like 2-3 times. They cannot force you to do oil changes at the dealer but you are responsible to make sure it does not run low. Tow it out of there (put oil in it) and take it to another dealer if they won't fix it. Good maintenance records are important if you have a warranty and at a good Toyota dealer, the cost of their oil changes are competitive with Jiffy Lube. Those receipts are golden and recorded at the dealer if you should lose yours. For that reason it is worthwhile to have oil changes done at an authorized dealer for warranty purposes.
