04 Toyota Tacoma Why does the ignition make a ticking noise when being started?

So my truck hasn't been drivin in a couple of months; I had to jump it off; let it run for a couple of minutes, drove it home. Then I turned it off %26amp; tried to turn it back on %26amp; it made a ticking noise. So it wouldn't turn on. The lights and everything come on but the battery light %26amp; check engine light comes on also.

So what can I do? Do I need to charge it longer, or do I need a new Battery?04 Toyota Tacoma Why does the ignition make a ticking noise when being started? When you parked for 2 to 3 moths was the battery good? How old is the battery? (More then 3 1/2 to 4 years Replace it).

The alternator is not made to fully charge a dead battery, you need to remove it and put it on a charger for 6 to 10 hours. NOTE; when you have to jump start a car you need to keep Radio, a/c, lights (off if day time) off while you drive so everything the alternator puts out go to the battery.

With a good or new battery in the car the battery should12V to12.5V with the engine off, 13.6V to 14.4V with the engine running and that will show you if the alternator is working properly.

Lights or no lights, the clicking is a weak or dead battery.04 Toyota Tacoma Why does the ignition make a ticking noise when being started?I would reccomend going to an auto parts store and have them check the battery. The battery would need more than a couple of minutes to charge up completly. Your best to just get a new battery, yours might be past recovery.04 Toyota Tacoma Why does the ignition make a ticking noise when being started? It sounds like your spark plug wires are leaking ( spark jumping out of the wire) or maybe some one pulled them off the plugs for you. I wouldn't think wires on an 04 would go bad that quick. To check it try to start it in the dark. Have some one crank the engine and you watch the engine and if you see sparks jumping every where you need new wires.

It's normal for the battery and check engine lights to be on because the engine isn't running. If it would start they go out.

Ops, I missed the part where you said you had to jump it to start it. That sounds like the battery is worn out. If you drove only a short distance home it may not have had time to charge the battery. If it was a long distance you need a battery. Jump it again and get it running. If the battery light goes out you need a battery. If the battery light stays on you need an alternator.04 Toyota Tacoma Why does the ignition make a ticking noise when being started?
your battery is in a state of discharge......it must be charged...with a slow charger...until fully charged.....then a battery breakdown test must be done to determine if it,s still good.........check with a volt meter......after charging....must read at least 12 or 12.5 volt,s minimum.
