I just bought a 2002 toyota celica in really good condition and I was thinking about putting a cold air intake in it, but I don't know much about it. This could indicate a lean condition (which could burn a hole in a piston.) and as one answerer wrote, if your 3/10ths horsepower is at 4000 rpm you cannot run around town using it. The actual gains vary from one car to another, but on a typical 4 cylinder made after 2000, gains for a cold air intake are minimal, 1-3hp usually at best. Yes, it's true that the stock intake is technically a "cold air intake" as the inlet is usually located in the fender well where the engine heat doesn't get to it, it's also more restrictive. if its a gt-s your looking at 3-8bhp in the mid range but also more at the top end.



do not put 3inch piping on it. the intake really adds more power because the pipe is bigger while the stock air box is more restrictive. if you go to big of piping the car will bog. also a known risk with cold air intakes is hydrolock in which your intake sucks up water into the engine (happens when you submerge it in water by splashing through a big puddle) and locks up the engine.

It will be very little HP gain and it will make your car a little bit louder. Bolt-on parts like a cold air intake will not add a significant amount of horsepower to a 4 banger engine. And yes, there is a downside to adding one. Cold air intakes usually have their gains in the mid-RPM range. 2-5 bhp can be expected with the addition of a cold air intake on a 4 cyl. straight from my motor builder/dyno guy's mouth. he uses a newer top notch dyno and has tested these things claims out on a few different occasions
