What cars are just as good as a 96-97 toyota camry?

I'm shopping for a used car and I heard toyota's are pretty good, and was wondering what over makes equal or surpass that brand. When it comes to reliability and gas mileage in that 1996-2000 era.

Thanks in advance. What cars are just as good as a 96-97 toyota camry? The 1997 Camry was probably the most reliable mainstream car of that era. See the first source for owner reviews. Be aware that the V6 is notorious for sludge if the oil change intervals are not followed faithfully, and the sludge gets very bad very fast. Change the oil on schedule and the problem does not exist. See the second source for an example.

That was not a stellar time for many of the major manufacturers. Honda had problems with ignition switches and the ever-troublesome main relays. Honda also had horrible problems with the automatic transmissions they used with their 6 cylinder engines between 1998 and 2004. It is wise to avoid those altogether. GM was doing some wild and wacky things, with terrible problems in their vehicles that used the new Electric Power Steering. Their adoption of the Passlock anti-theft system leaves a lot of people wondering why their car won't start; it seems more effective against owners than against thieves. The real thief-stopper was Dex-cool, the GM-required coolant that destroyed intake manifold gaskets on the 6 cylinder engines and was sludging up cooling systems on all GM models in the late 1990s.

Ford was beginning to improve in the late 1990s. The nightmares they had with the first decade or so of AXOD transmissions were under control and they had begun to use better parts. GM and Ford had both been catering to the fleet market for so long they appeared to be making their cars to last for three years. A family friend had a 1990 Escort that had just made it out of warranty and still had a year of payments left when the water pump seized, destroying the timing belt and showering the cylinders with debris from what had moments before been valve guides. At four years old the car was not worth repairing, and I had already heard occasional stories of the same thing from other sources. By 2000 Ford was putting some good cars on the road... although even Ford-o-philes will warn about the Contour.

Chrysler still just didn't get it. Their passenger cars were as troublesome in the 1990s and at least early 2000s as the 1984 Dodge 600 we had. One of the three cars we ever bought new, it was the most troublesome car we ever owned. Much of that was from the Mitsubishi power train. What cars are just as good as a 96-97 toyota camry?Honda's are far better in my opinion. Excellent engineering, quality, gas mileage and parts that do happen to break are a dime a dozen due to their popularity. What cars are just as good as a 96-97 toyota camry? All cars made are just as good or better.
