The antenna on my 2000 Toyota Avalon has decided to stop retracting. The motor still makes a noise as if it is trying to do something but nothing happens.
How can I fix it?How do I fix the power antenna on my 2000 Toyota Avalon?buy a new antenna, get an after market electric antenna if your looking to save a buck or you could just replace it with a conventional car antenna. How do I fix the power antenna on my 2000 Toyota Avalon?First, you can take the Antenna out by undoing the nut on the guard around the antenna. You can usually then pull it right out and see what the problem is. It has a long flexible geared rack which a gear on the motor actually drives the antenna up and down. If it has worn at the end you need a new antenna, they only cost about $20 -$30.
If it is an automatic antenna, which goes up and down as you turn on the radio the method to install a new one is turn on the radio, push the rack down the hole until it stops, then turn the radio off and it should pull the antenna with it. Try this first with the old one to se if it works.
If it doesn't work, you may have to get a complete new motor and antenna assembly. How do I fix the power antenna on my 2000 Toyota Avalon? Not uncommon for the plastic cord on the mast to be broken. The mast is about $30 or so from your local Toyota dealer.
Even pulling the mast out by undoing the top nut will not be enough. There will a broken section inside the motor which will stop the new mast from going in all the way.
Pull the inner boot trim out, and remove the motor assembly. It's held together by phillips head screws. Don't lose the screws. Pry the plastic case apart and remove the broken cord from the white wheel which is inside the motor.
Re-fit the motor, and have the radio on. Wait for about 30 seconds while the motor winds all the way up... then get somebody to switch the radio off, while feeding the cord from the new mast inside the motor. Let the mast get pulled all the way down, then tighten the nut.
Using long nosed pliers can undo the net, or you can buy the proper tool for the job.
Shouldn't take more than 30 minutes to do.
